Generations Psychological & Consultation Services, LLC

MISSION

As a counseling psychologist with an emphasis on health, I work with individuals, couples, and families as they adapt to changes resulting from aging, chronic illness, and acquired disability. I believe people can be resilient when they or someone they love faces serious health challenges. My mission is to provide a non-judgmental and authentic atmosphere while I work with you to explore uncertainty, identify and develop strengths, and reinvigorate a sense of purpose and meaning in life.

You have taken a very positive step by deciding to seek therapy or obtain consultation. Currently, I provide in-person and telehealth services to individuals, couples, and families. My office is located in Tennessee, and I can see anyone living in Tennessee, Iowa, Florida, or any participating PsyPact state. I am also available for consultation to healthcare teams. “When the other person is hurting, confused, troubled, anxious, alienated, terrified; or when he or she is doubtful of self-worth, uncertain as to identity, then understanding is called for. The gentle and sensitive companionship of an empathic stance… provides illumination and healing. In such situations deep understanding is, I believe, the most precious gift one can give to another.”
– Carl Rogers

Psychotherapy

I provide in-person and telehealth psychotherapy for patients adjusting to aging, coping with chronic illness or acquired disability, and caregivers in the following modalities: individual, couples, family, and group.

    I Have Experience With…

    Individual Psychotherapy

In individual therapy, you and I will work together to define what is happening for you and identify your personal strengths. We will set reasonable goals and work to achieve theme.

I also provide services via telehealth in the event you experience barriers to meeting in person, such as inclement weather, mobility, or inability to find care for your loved one during an appointment.

    Couples Therapy

Having a chronic illness or acquired disability requires effective communication and healthy problem-solving. I will work with you and your partner to build relationship skills to enhance the way you cope as a couple.

    Family Therapy

Old habits of communication and family dynamics can be difficult to manage in the context of a major health event. In family therapy, we identify patterns of relating to one another and actively seek solutions and meaningful roles for all family members.

    Group Therapy

Group therapy provides patients with the opportunity to meet others with a similar condition. It might seem intimidating at first, and most people who participate in a therapy group feel this way initially. But, this shared experience can be invaluable as part of treatment and recovery.

    Common Medical Conditions

I have provided psychotherapy to patients with the following co-occurring medical conditions: chronic pain, stroke, traumatic brain injury, organ transplant, cancer, spinal cord injury, amputation, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, dementia, vestibular disorders, digestive diseases, and psychogenic/somatic/functional conditions. I’ve also worked with folks recovering from motor vehicle accidents as well as less common conditions, such as Guillon-Barre and mitochondrial disease.

Please note: not all patients experiencing these conditions are good candidates for psychotherapy, as their condition might preclude them from participating in a meaningful way. In such cases, therapy with caregivers might be a better route. Either way, I am happy to meet for an initial session with all stakeholders to determine the best course of action.

    My Approach & Philosophy

The approaches I use are evidence-based, meaning there is scientific research and clinical experience supporting my rationale for intervention. I don’t believe in taking a one-size-fits-all approach, so you can rest assured your treatment will be personalized and collaborative. I pay particular attention to cultural and societal variables impacting your life. Theories and techniques I tend to use most include cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, mindfulness,  existential psychotherapy, psychodynamic therapy, and family systems.

I love psychotherapy, and I love what I do. I’m looking forward to our time together.
